One day in California

Sunya Vakil and Kifah Shah met for lunch on May 13, 2016 while Kifah was on a trip to the States from her then-home, Karachi, Pakistan. Discussing the importance of representation in fashion, the necessity to shift the narrative on Pakistan in the world, and the aim to merge all parts of their identities, they conceptualized SuKi Se (Urdu: Sunya + Kifah Se; English: From Sunya + Kifah).

Two Weeks in Karachi

Kifah was based in Karachi until August 2016,  and from May until August, she and Sunya worked on creating a team. They hired garment workers, an operations manager, and gained mentors. The co-founders went back to Karachi from their Los Angeles base in December 2016 for two weeks to produce the launch line. Since then, they have been corresponding and working internationally on getting the products ready.

One year later

It has been a year since SuKi Se was conceptualized and the first thing Sunya and Kifah will mention is how much of a learning experience it has been. From hiccups at every stage in the supply chain to celebrating small wins with the whole team, it has been a challenging but beautiful experience - and SuKi Se is just getting started.
